nubian choreography – white river junction

WHEN: Wednesdays, JANUARY 12 – MARCH 2 (8 WEEKS)
DESCRIPTION: This is it! A very fun Nubian-influenced choreography by Egypt’s best known choreographer since 1959, Mahmoud Reda. This man is the King of Egyptian choreography, and in particular, the King and true originator of Egyptian theatrical stage dance for groups. I had the great fortune of learning this choreography (less than 10 feet away from the "master") in Egypt just a few weeks ago and now I'm passing it on to you! All Level 2 students who are also taking a Technique class (except those who are taking Intro to Level 2) are eligible to enroll in this class.
Where is “Nubia”? Nubia is the name of a specific ethnic and cultural area in Africa. It is part of the Nile Valley, and it lies partly in southern Egypt and partly in northern Sudan. In the north, its boundary is near Aswan, Egypt. It extends southward, along the Nile, to about the area of modern Khartoum, Sudan, where the Blue and White Niles meet to form the single great Nile.
This piece has a simple, but very different movement repertoire. Rather than reproducing “folk dance” in its pure form, Mahmoud’s field research in the 1960’s unearthed characteristic regional movement which he then selectively chose and creatively integrated into stage dance. The result was dramatic: the people of the area recognized themselves in his work! This is the hallmark of a true master – to take the movement from an ethnic group and interpret it using both imagination and veracity such that the people feel seen and understood. That’s Mahmoud. He’s my hero!
