DESCRIPTION: I am excited beyond words to introduce Persian Classical Dance to my students. Before I describe the class, I need to be clear that this class is only for people who are motivated to take two classes this semester. All Level 2 students are being asked to take Technique class, but if you have the time and funds, this class will be a knock-your-socks-off and change-your-life kind of opportunity. The class is a long time in coming - 8 years since I first began my study of Persian Dance - and it has a lot of history and emotional energy behind it for me. Persian Classical Dance is a completely different Middle Eastern dance genre than Belly Dance. Classical Persian is also entirely different than Bandari. The vocabulary is rich, floral, decorative, and intensely expressive in the arms, wrists, hands and face. It is at once rhythmic and flowing. For me, this style is dance heaven. I first had the opportunity to study and perform several forms of Persian Dance with the Silk Road Dance Company. Our Artistic Director, Laurel Victoria Gray, is a world famous Persian Dance scholar. I am also a private student of Persian dancer, choreographer and nationally sought after teacher, Shahrzad Khorsandi. Persian Dance has influenced Belly Dance in subtle ways, but the music and the body movement vocabulary of the classical form are mostly different. In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of Classical Persian Dance in preparation for a Persian Dance choreography in the Spring semester. Students who are interested in learning the Persian dance choreography must take this prerequisite class because the vocabulary and movement are quite complicated, advanced and very dissimilar to what my students have studied to date. That being said, I encourage any Level 2 student (even the Intro to Level 2 group) to consider this class. This is a rare offering, not to be missed. Make-up classes may not be used in this class.
