Shaabi is an Arabic word that means "of the people".  The word is used to describe a genre of music and, therefore, dance.  There are many forms of shaabi music and dance in the Middle East.  This class will specifically use Egyptian shaabi music and an Egyptian shaabi dance style.  Using very fun pop music, the genre originated in the 1970's as an artistic outlet for the challenges of modern Egyptian life.  There is also a lot of humor and double entendre in the music which gets expressed in the movement.  How does Egyptian shaabi dance differ from classical Raqs Sharqi?  They are both belly dance, but Shaabi is earthier (less lifted and more flat footed), less isolated and more informal in feeling.  Think about how a really skilled dancer would dance if she knew the song and was at a party with everyone watching her.  It is FULL of personality and quite sexy.
